1864, 10 cent red on letter sent from Riouw to Samarang. Stamp with full to wide margins on all sides, just touching at foot, tied to very attractive Chinese cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO with red circular Riouw 28.2 1865 on the letter. On back is red Samarang arrival 13.3 1865. A most appealing Chinese envelope with four large seal markings or chops applied on front (probably name or company chops) and a large woodcut decoration on back. Letter with full content preserved. A very tidy and fresh letter sheet. With certificate APS, 2002.
A very rare and fully preserved commercial correspondence from the Chinese community in Riouw on Sumatra’s east coast, close to Singapore; the letter would have travelled by sea to Samarang on Java. The ethnic letters from the Chinese community in the Dutch East Indies continues to be an underexplored area of research, especially the communication network and postal services of Chinese mail handlers and the significance of the many chops applied to the letters.
