1864, 10 cent red on letter sent from sub-post office Malang to Soerabaya. Superb stamp with deep, intense colour, strong impression and wide margins on all sides, tied to fresh cover by centrally struck black framed FRANCO with red circular Passoeroean ?.9 1864 on the cover. Letter datelined Tanah Wangie 5.9 1864, red Malang line mark on back alongside arrival Soerabaija 9.9 1864. Complete folded letter of excellent paper quality with full preserved content. A superb letter in an excellent state of preservation sent from the small Malang office; opens up very well to display the well-struck Malang and arrival postmarks on back.
A very rare letter from the village of Tanah Wangie, located 10 km outside Toeren, south east of Malang. The place was an important plantation area (mostly sugar cane, tobacco and cocoa bean). Written on quality paper embossed with the words “Tanah Wangie, Malang” indicating it was most likely sent from a major plantation. The sub-post office of Malang operated from 1864 until granted post office status in May 1873; as a sub-post office it was under the Residency of Passoeroean.
