1864, 10 cent red on letter from Batavia 20.1. 1865. Stamp in exceptional quality with wide, even margins, tied to cover by well-struck black framed FRANCO alongside red Batavia circular datestamp. Letter sent to “Sumatrasche Weeskamer” in Padang, with arrival stamp 27.1 on back. Stamp placed top left with manuscript “Franco” written under. Letter sheet without content.
ONE OF THE FINEST SURVIVING LETTERS WITH THE FIRST ISSUE STAMP. STAMP IN PERFECT CONDITION AND BEAUTIFUL HANDWRITING ON FRONT ON A FRESH LETTER FREE OF CREASES OR MARKS.
The stamp is attractively cancelled with half of Franco cancel on the stamp, as per postal regulations. Letter sent to the Orphan Chamber in Padang; the orphan chamber (“weeskamer”) was a government body found in most major cities in the Dutch Indies; it was distinct from an orphanage and responsible for overseeing the administration of the inheritance and estates of orphans.
