1864, 10 cent red on letter from Bandjermasin 2.2 1866 to Soerabaija. Stamp cut into at base, tied by well-struck framed FRANCO with very clear red Bandjermasin circular datestamp placed upper right. Soerabaija arrival 5.2 on back.
A MAJOR RARITY OF SOUTH KALIMANTAN POSTAL HISTORY. ACCORDING TO TAY, THE FRAMED FRANCO HANDSTAMP IS NOT PREVIOUSLY RECORDED ON LETTER FROM BANDJERMASIN.
Sent to merchants van Delden in Soerabaija. The letter demonstrates the practice that developed in the Dutch East Indies of placing the stamp on the left side of the letter, very often with manuscript “Franco” on cover or under the stamp.
