Masque funéraire féminin finement sculpté dans un bois dur de qualité, représentant un visage idéalisé aux proportions harmonieuses, caractéristique du style de l’époque tardive. La pièce présente un grand couvre-chef orné de bandes horizontales, avec des éléments décoratifs rouges en pointillés encore visibles. Le visage arbore un sourire serein, les yeux grands ouverts, avec les paupières et les sourcils finement dessinés en noir.

Une œuvre de qualité, peinte avec une base d’ocre, conservant une grande partie de sa polychromie d’origine. En bon état général, bien proportionnée et esthétiquement très réussie. Présente quelques éclats, abrasions et pertes de peinture ; écaillures et décoloration du plâtre peint, mais bonne préservation des pigments restants. Au revers, quatre trous de chevilles permettant la fixation du masque sur un cercueil ou un sarcophage en bois.
Témoignage funéraire important d’une culture où la préservation du corps et sa représentation réaliste étaient essentielles pour assurer l'identité du défunt dans l’au-delà. Ce masque a été soigneusement façonné pour refléter les traits du défunt et constituer un portrait durable dans l’au-delà.
Provenance : Acquis auprès d’un antiquaire à Berne ; conservé dans une collection privée à Genève depuis trois générations.
A very finely proportioned mask of an idealised face crafted with meticulous detail, with large headdress with horizontal bands and some elements of red dotted decoration remaining. Face with a serene smile and eyes large and wide open, with eyelids and brows carefully applied in black.

An attractive and high-quality work painted with an ochre primer and with large parts of the original finish intact. In good condition, very attractive and well-proportioned. With some nicks and abrasions and some loss of paint; chipping and fading to painted gesso, good preservation to remaining pigment. On the back are four dowel holes for attaching the mask to a wooden coffin/sarcophagus.
An important funerary relic from a culture in which preserving the body and giving it a life-like appearance was essential. Carefully crafed to depict the likeness of the deceased and serve as a visual representation of the individual’s identity in the afterlife.
Provenance: Purchased from an antique dealer in Bern and held in a private collection in Geneva for three generations
