1875 (Dec. 1) entire to a seminarian in France, redirected to Santesteban in the Basque Region, Spain during the Third Carlist War, the original British franking from London on DE 1 has been overstruck with imperf 50c. green tied by lozenge of dots, reverse with Paris and Bordeaux-Irun transits, at Ainhon the item was forwarded (from an undercover address) to a different Basque village, Santesteban. Probably the finest of the known mixed frankings, a similar cover with an uncancelled 1 real was sold in the Afinsa ‘Joyas de Espana’ in 1998 (lot 153). A rare opportunity to acquire such an item. A.Roig handstamps (2), Scheller signature and Exfima Cert (1977) and F Graus Cert.
