1896 1/2 Anna Black on Blue-Green paper. A remarkable example printed on
bluish-green wove paper, showing wide margins and in flawless condition. An
identical example realized a record £69,600 in
the Stanley Gibbons auction of May 11, 2021 — its only recorded appearance at
public auction. Stanley Gibbons notes that fewer than three examples are
known to exist.
This example is even rarer as it represents a
distinct variety of SG5, identifiable by the orientation of the upper left
clover-leaf ornament, which appears rotated (rather than vertically aligned as
in the standard type). A similar design is known on Duttia
postal stationery, though those are printed on laid paper rather than wove.
