Spectacular Horizontal Strip of Twelve of Plate 3
1840 1d Black, Plate 3, in an exceptional complete horizontal strip of twelve (positions JA–JL). The stamps display a remarkably fresh and deep colour, with clear to good margins all round notably impressive for a multiple of this magnitude, with only a very close margin at the left.
Each stamp is struck with a crisp red Maltese Cross cancellation, evenly applied across the strip, greatly enhancing both visual impact and desirability. Minor archival creasing, consistent with original postal use, has been professionally pressed out. The piece was almost certainly used on a large-format legal letter, representing a twelve-pence franking for correspondence weighing up to six ounces—an impressive and rarely encountered rate.
The overall appearance is outstanding, combining scale, freshness, and historical significance. A magnificent and highly important Penny Black multiple, seldom offered and rarely surpassed.
