Makassar. 1870, 10 cent and 50 cent on letter from Makassar by overland mail via Brindisi to Deventer. Stamps tied by number cancel 9 of Makassar and circular date stamp 13.1 1874 on the cover alongside boxed routing mark NED-INDIE VIA MARSEILLE FRANSCHE PAKKETB; though endorsed “Via Brindisi” the letter must have been routed by Marseille. Deventer arrival 6.3 1874 on back. Stamps in excellent condition and struck by a very early number cancellation from the second week of usage (number cancellations introduced 1.1. 1874). Very attractive and rare letter from the well-known Ankersmith correspondence.
