Batavia. 10 cent 1868 and 50 cent 1870 in mixed franking on envelope from Onrust via Batavia to Brielle, the Netherlands. Stamps tied by framed FRANCO and Batavia half-round franco postmark 25.1 1871 with an additional strike on the cover. Also on front are numberings with a dating in Batavia 26.1 1871. On back are red line stamp ONRUST (24 mm) and Brielle arrival with unclear date. Envelope with a few small tears to right side and stamps with excellent perforation on an extremely rare mixed franking cover in very good condition.
THE ONLY MIXED FRANKING LETTER ORIGINATING IN THE SMALL ONRUST ISLAND SUB-POST OFFICE; USAGE WITH DOUBLE CANCELLATION. A GREAT RARITY OF CLASSIC NEI POSTAL HISTORY AND A TOP EXHIBITION PIECE.
60 cent rate for a letter to the Netherlands via Marseille (Jan. 1870-May 1876). On Onrust Island was a naval base and military fortification. The Onrust sub-post office opened in Oct. 1868 and was closed in Feb. 1889; the office collected mail for the main post office in nearby Batavia as this letter exemplifies.
