Batavia. 10 cent 1868 and 50 cent 1870 in rare mixed franking on piece, tied by Batavia half-round franco postmark 25.8 1870. Both stamp with good colour and excellent perforation. A rare remnant of the highly desirable mixed franking of the 1868 and 1870 issues, of which 27 letters have been recorded. The mixed issue use on this piece would most likely have paid the 60 cent rate for a letter to the Netherlands via Marseille (rate valid Jan. 1870-May 1876). A most attractive exhibition piece with different shades of the red stamps.
The mixed usage of the second and third issues occurred because the 10 cent of 1868 had to be cleared from post offices before the 10 cent of the 1870 issue could be put into circulation. Because of this, the 10 cent of the third series began circulation very late in 1870 and not from January 1st as the other higher value of that series.
