Weltevreden. 1870, 20 cent blue and 50 cent red in pair on folded letter of second weight step from Weltevreden to Deventer, the Netherlands. Stamps in excellent condition tied by rare Weltevreden round franco postmark 2.7 1873, with an additional strike on the cover; manuscript “Franco” and “2” indicating second weight. Also blue oval cachet of E. Ten Brinck & Co. Soerabaija and routing handstamp NED-INDIE VIA MARSEILLE FRANSCHE PAKKETB. Deventer receiver 11.8 1873 on back. Complete folded letter without content in very fresh condition. With certificate Vleeming, 2018.
A GREAT RARITY OF THE ROUND FRANCO POSTMARKS; ONLY THREE LETTERS KNOWN. THIS EXCEPTIONAL LETTER SHOWS A VERY EARLY USAGE FROM ONE MONTH AFTER THE ESTABLISHMENT OF WELTEVREDEN AS REGULAR POST OFFICE.
One of the finest letters from the extensive correspondence to Ankersmith in Deventer. The office of Weltevreden opened in 1864 but used Batavia postmarks; April 1st 1873 Weltevreden acquired status as a regular post office and used the round franco postmark. The 120 cent rate for double weight to the Netherlands by overland via Marseille was valid Jan. 1863-May 1876. The total journey time of 35 days is unusually fast.
