Buitenzorg. 1870, 20 cent blue very well struck by Buitenzorg round franco postmark 10.12 1873. A superb cancel on a stamp with excellent perforation and a slight bend in bottom left corner, only visible from the back. Voerman 400. A very late use and the latest recorded date for this postmark; just a few weeks before the introduction of the number cancellation. Rare and attractive.
The post offices of Buitenzorg and Muntok used the half-round franco postmark and the round franco mark at the same time. The reason for this remains unclear.
