Soerabaija. 1870, 5 cent and 50 cent on folded letter from Soerabaija to Amsterdam; stamp with minor perforation faults tied by centrally struck Soerabaija half-round franco postmark 1.7 1871 with an additional strike on the front and manuscript “franco”. Also manuscript directive “per landmail via Triest”. Commercial oval cachet of merchant Houtbeckers in Soerabaya in bottom left corner and Amsterdam arrival 22.8 1871 on back. Very rare and with an attractive, colourful franking.
The 55 cent rate for overland via Triest (Jan. 1870-May 1876) is much rarer than the 60 cent rate via Marseille. The Triest route was available until April 1877. Route marking handstamps for Triest became available around March 1872, which is why this letter carries no route marking.
