Batavia. 1870, two 50 cent red on very attractive envelope sent to St Brieuc, France; stamps tied to cover by two well-placed Batavia half-round franco cancel 28.2 1872 type VI with an additional strike on the front and manuscript “Port payé”. Also red PD on front alongside a clear red octagonal “Indes. Neer. V.S. P.F. Amb. Mar.” (Salles I.891). St Brieuc arrival 2.4 1872 on back. A very attractive envelope with stamps in good condition with a few small stains; a very rare pre-UPU letter paying a 100 cent double weight rate to France (marked “2” in red crayon on front).
In the lower left corner is a red oval sender’s cachet “Prytz Cramer & Co. Ship-Chandler and Commission Agents Batavia”. Newspapers from this time show Prytz Cramer & Co. offering wine and cognac from France.
