Bandjermasin. 1868, 10 cent red vertical strip of three (pos. 19, 29, 39) on envelope from Bandjermasin to Bernburg, Germany. Stamps in excellent condition, struck by the half-round franco cancel Bandjermasin 18.5 1869 with an additional round cancel strike of same date in red on the cover. Manuscript directive “Via Alexandria-Triest” crossed out and replaced by “Marseille”. Also on front are red circular Ind. Neer. V. Suez P. An. A. Mar. (Salles I 892; struck in Marseille), as well as red cursive “affr. Insuff.” (not in Van der Linden) and French-Prussian border marking boxed F. 48 (Van der Linden 1184). AN EXTREMELY RARE LETTER TO GERMANY PARTIALLY PAID BY THE 10 CENT 1868. PRE-UPU LETTERS SENT ABROAD AND BEARING THE SECOND ISSUE ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR RARITIES OF CLASSIC NEI PHILATELY. A TOP RARITY OF THE TAY GRAND PRIX COLLECTION.

Four letters are recorded from the Hermann correspondence from Bandjermasin to Bernburg. The postal rates to countries other than the Netherlands from this pre-UPU period are often uncertain and, it seems, a little fluid; this letter partially paid with a marking of insufficiently paid and “27” marked in crayon indicating the further charge in Silbergroschen. This letter changed from via Triest to Marseille by British packet. This letter followed the route Batavia-Singapore-Ceylon-Suez-Alexandria (by train)-Marseille. Further note on front “uit de bus” indicating the letter was put into a letterbox in Bandjermasin and probably only prepaid as domestic letter of the third weight step (“3” noted on front in blue crayon, replacing “2”).
