Soerabaija. 1864, 10 cent red on print matter letter from Soerabaija to the Hague. Stamp with clear to huge margins and very wide at bottom, attractively tied to letter by the half-round franco cancel Soerabaija 23.9 1868 with an additional strike on the cover. Also on front is green triangular “zegelrecht” marking of 1½ cent, a charge on foreign printed matter, and a marking used 1844-1869. On back is s’Gravenhage 3.11 arrival. Empty letter sheet in a fresh and uncreased condition with a very fresh and attractive stamp. Extremely fine and rare.

The 10 cent print matter rate via Marseille was in effect 1 Jan 1863-1 May 1876. The triangular handstamp indicates a tax on printed matter that was applied and collected by the post office in the Hague. This letter sent to J.P. Cornets de Groot van Kraaijenburg (1808-1878), former Minister of Colonies and member of the Council of State 1862-1878.
