Riouw. 1864, 10 cent red on envelope from Riouw to Batavia. Stamp with clear to wide margins and very wide at bottom, attractively tied by perfect strike of the half-round franco cancel Riouw 13.11 1866 with an additional strike on the cover. From the correspondence to the “Marine Magazijnmeester” in Batavia and with address effaced as is normal for this correspondence. Red Batavia arrival 16.11 1866 on back. A rare letter in very fine condition, with a few toning spots on front of which one affects the stamp minimally.
A RARE EXHIBITION PIECE AND ONE OF ONLY FOUR LETTERS RECORDED WITH THE HALF-ROUND FRANCO POSTMARK OF RIOUW ON THE FIRST ISSUE. THE DATE 13 NOVEMBER 1866 MAKES THIS THE EARLIEST KNOWN USE OF THE RIOUW POSTMARK.
