Kedirie. 1864, 10 cent red on folded letter sent from sub-post office Blitar, via Kedirie 11.5 1868 to merchant Gimberg & Co. in Soerabaya. Stamp with full to very wide margins, tied to cover by black framed FRANCO and the black Kedirie half-round franco 11.5. Stamp placed bottom left on letter with manuscript “Franco” written underneath. Red BLITAR line stamp (17 mm) and Soerabaija 14.5 1868 arrival on back. Stamp in superb condition and showing the very rare double-cancellation that occurred with mail from the sub-post offices. Complete letter sheet without preserved content; some fragility of paper with splitting along folds which has caused the letter front to become separated.

Blitar operated as sub-post office from 1864 till April 1874 when it acquired status as a regular post office. This letter shows a standard practice of the sub-post office of applying the office name stamp in red on back and cancelling the stamp with the FRANCO postmark; subsequently, the post office of Kedirie struck the datestamp on stamp and letter to affirm dispatch date. An important item of Java postal history.
