1864, 10 cent red on letter from sub-post office Padang Pandjang via Padang 29.7 1865 to Batavia. Stamp with full to wide margins, tied to cover by diagonally struck black framed FRANCO with red circular Padang datestamp on the cover. On reverse is very well struck black octagonal PADANG PANDJANG. Complete folded letter without content. Batavia arrival 3.8 1865 on back. Stamp with a light fold in upper margin and letter with some paper splits along folds, two hinges applied to top to reinforce paper.
THE ONLY LETTER KNOWN TO US FROM THE PADANG PANDJANG SUB-POST OFFICE. A VERY IMPORTANT SUMATRA POSTAL HISTORY ITEM WHICH OPENS UP WELL FOR DISPLAY TO SHOW THE BOXED NAME MARKING ON REVERSE.
Padang Pandjang operated as sub-post office from April 1864 till August 1875 when its status changed to a full post office. Located in the highlands of West Sumatra about 70 km east of Padang, the letter will have travelled around high mountains and the Merapi Volcano, a journey of about 200 km, to get to the main post office of Padang for transit to Batavia.
