1864, 10 cent red on letter from Benkoelen 31.3 1865 to Batavia. Perfect stamp of fresh colour with wide, even margins, tied to cover by well-struck black framed FRANCO applied diagonally alongside red Benkoelen circular datestamp. Folded letter with full English-language content, and address to a Chinese person in Batavia written with Chinese brush in bold characters (perhaps redrawn at a later date). Instruction bottom left “P. Macassar”.
A VERY RARE LETTER FROM A MERCHANT IN BENKOELEN SENT TO A CHINESE IN BATAVIA. THERE ARE ONLY 2 OR 3 KNOWN LETTERS FROM BENKOELEN WITH STAMP CANCELLED BY THE FRAMED FRANCO. A LETTER FULL OF CHARACTER.
The letter was sent on the Dutch steamship Makassar which sailed between major ports in the East Indies archipelago.
