1864, 10 cent red on letter from the sub-post office Meester Cornelis 6.8 1865. Stamp in perfect quality with wide, even margins, tied to cover by diagonally struck black framed FRANCO alongside red Batavia circular datestamp 6.8; red line stamp of MEESTER CORNELIS (antiqua type) on back. Letter sent to the President of the Orphan Chamber in Menado on the island of Sulawesi. Stamp placed top left with manuscript “Franco” written underneath. Letter sheet without content, very fresh and with well-struck postmarks; tear to the reverse which runs through the Meester Cornelis line stamp.

Meester Cornelis in the East district of Batavia (today Jatinegara) was named after the Malay-speaking Calvinist preacher and landowner Cornelis Senen. A sub-post office opened here in 1864 which changed it’s status to post office in Oct. 1873.
