1846, “duiten” postage due label, type II, with good to large margins all around, manuscript rate “3.24” and date “11 Oct. 1846”, on folded letter from Nijmegen 22 Aug. 1846 to Batavia, Java,. With sender’s notation “franco Alexandrie”. Nijmegen datemark in black and blue “P.F.” (Port Francais). On back are manuscript rate markings, incl. “220”, probably to indicate amount prepaid by sender. Attractive and comprehensive address to military personnel in the infantry battalion in Batavia. Letter with unusually good paper quality and free of the usual ink corrosion; with two vertical folds, one of which affects the postage due label. The label has two small brown spots. With certificate NVPH 1998.
A very attractive landmail letter with the label type II, in duiten cent currency and reduced size (45 x 21 mm, against the koper label of 57 x 21 mm). The payment of 324 duiten covered the postage for double weight Alexandria – Batavia.
