1846, “koper” postage due label, type Ic, with “Maill” with double II, with wide margins on all sides and a small central tear, manuscript rate “4.32” and date “13 Aug. 1846”, on very attractive folded letter from Amsterdam 22 June 1846 to the merchant C.J. Daendels in Samarang, Java. Sender’s directive “p overlandmail via Suez & Sincapore” and “fo. Marseille”. Amsterdam datemark partly covered by label and 2x blue “P.P.” indicating double postage paid to Alexandria. Weight noted on reverse 20 grams, indicating 3rd rate. Empty letter sheet with only minimal ink corrosion to the front; label with small tear in bottom center, but otherwise in very fine condition. Certificate Henk Vleeming, 2017.
A VERY ATTRACTIVE AND TIDY LETTER WITH THE EXTREMELY RARE LABEL WITH “MAILL” MISSPELLING, TYPE IC. CERTIFICATE VLEEMING NOTES “ONLY 3 LABELS TYPE IC KNOWN TO ME. TOGETHER WITH THE DOUBLE RATE, THE ONLY KNOWN TO ME”.
Journey time 52 days (average 50-60 days). The rate of 432 koper covers English overland and packet mail double weight rate of 260 cent and 100 cent for ship Singapore-Batavia (in all 360 cents = 432 koper), to be paid by the recipient. 315 cent was pre-paid by the sender for the distance Amsterdam-Alexandria.
