1845, “koper” postage due label, type I, with large margins to almost touching frame, manuscript rate “2.16” and date “12 Feb. 1846”, on large part of folded letter from Amsterdam 20 Dec. 1845 to Samarang, Java. Sender’s directive “per Overlandmail via Suez & Singapore” and “per Marseille”. Amsterdam datemark covered by label and blue “P.P.” indicating postage paid to Alexandria; on back is indistinct Singapore Bearing transit stamp. Incomplete letter with addressee’s name crossed out and the usual light ink corrosion, splits along folds and a horizontal file fold not affecting the label which is in excellent condition. Certificate NVPH, 1998.
A very fine postage due label on letter routed through Marseille to Malta and then on the overland route Alexandria-Suez, from there to Galle (Ceylon) and Singapore, with arrival in Batavia in February 1846. The journey time was 54 days, typical of the overland route and much shorter than the maritime routing via Cape of Good Hope that usually took 3-4 months. The rate of 216 cents koper comprised postage from Alexandria (156 cents) and the sea route Singapore-Batavia (60 cents).
