1802, VOC 5 stuiver postmark type II in red (WdB 5d) on folded letter 3 Apr. 1802 from Sergeant Jan van Loo in Surabaya to Jacobus de Leij in the Heere Logiment (Gentlemen’s Lodging) in Batavia. Complete letter with preserved correspondence and with a perfect strike of postmark; 4 wormholes are visible on the front, with one affecting the O of VOC. In 1789 the company Beyvanck in Batavia created three VOC postmarks for inland use with denominations of 5, 10, and 15 stuivers, indicating amounts to be paid on delivery, and these were used until about 1810. The charge depended on the number of sheets, and this letter is a single sheet (“eerste formaat”) charged 5 st.
