1789 VOC 1 gulden postmark in black (WdB 2c), very clear strike on envelope to Haarlem. With sender’s directive “Per de Paket Booth de Luchtbol”. Letter of three sheets (“derde formaat”) with the 1 gulden postmark and red crayon “20” stuivers (=1 gulden) crossed out and re-rated “23” to include sending to recipient in Haarlem. Docketing on back “Batavia 1 December 1789” and “Ontv(angen) 5 May 1790”. Empty envelope in very fresh condition, with a tear top right. With certificate NVPH 2000.
VERY FINE LETTER WITH THE “VOC 1G” POSTMARK FROM THE FIRST YEAR OF USAGE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAR STRIKE OF THE POSTMARK ON A PACKET LETTER FROM BATAVIA TO HAARLEM. A MAJOR POSTAL HISTORY RARITY OF THE DUTCH EAST INDIES.
A very rare letter sent on the vessel Luchtbol built in the Netherlands for the Chamber Rotterdam 1788. This letter is part of a well-known correspondence from the Indies via the Cape of Good Hope to Christianus Carolus Henricus van der Aa (1718-1793), Lutheran pastor in Haarlem and secretary of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. On the reverse is a summary of content: the letter contained an extract from the will of Mr. Hooijman in Batavia who bequeathed 1000 guldens to a patriotic society (“H.M.D.W. over de liefde to het Vaterland”). The summary shows that wills and financial dispositions from Batavia had to be sent to the Netherlands for approval. The reverse of the letter is sealed by two red wax seals (heraldic design with two fish) at both end of the envelope, as is customary for notarial letters carrying testamentary content.
