"Zee Brieven/Ongefrankeerd" large negative-impression oval handstamp in red (WdB 62b) on letter with enclosed content from Samarang 16 Mar. 1830 to Amsterdam. A readable but slightly indistinct strike of this very rare maritime postmark, with additional red "ZEE BRIEF/ONGEFRANKEERD" oval handstamp in red (WdB 63c). With taxation 60c written twice on front (rate valid Apr. 1816-Sep. 1850). On the back are Hellevoetsluis line mark with “Zeebrief” cursive mark, both in red. Certificate NVPH, 2000.
THE EXTREMELY RARE LARGE, NEGATIVE-IMPRESSION ZEEBRIEF HANDSTRUCK STAMP ALONGSIDE THE MORE COMMON “ZEEBRIEF ONGEFRANKEERD”; A DOUBLE USE KNOWN IN LESS THAN 5 EXAMPLES. THE UNPAID SHIP LETTER MARKING IS RATED 500 IN WOLFF DE BEER AND IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF DUTCH EAST INDIES MARITIME POSTMARKS.
A superb letter sent by ship to the Rotterdam port of Hellevoetsluis. With endorsement on front “Per schip Aurora, Kapt. Haan”. The ship Aurora arrived in Samarang Mar. 17th and departed Apr. 2nd, bound for Rotterdam via Batavia. Very fine condition with a few brown spots to the letter sheet and with a nearly complete red wax seal on back.
