Letter from Samarang 17 May 1820 to the Batavia merchant company van Rijk, Prediger & Co., showing a perfect, bold strike of the “JAVA POST OFFICE/SA-/MARANG/DOL-/LORS/STY-/VERS" double-circle handstamp (WdB 14), with accompanying boxed “POST PAID” (WdB 30). 12 stuivers rate written into the postmark. Certificate NVPH 1998.
The British double-circle handstamps were used by the Dutch administration after the British left in 1816 and the Samarang postmark is known in use 1812-1826. Very fine, with some light tropical browning of the paper and very minor ink corrosion to the address.
