Letter datelined Calcutta 21 Feb. 1814 to Lieutenant J.W. Littler in Sourabaya, sent via Batavia and struck by two "JAVA GENERAL POST OFFICE/BA-/TAVIA/DOL-/LORS/STY-/VERS" double-circle handstamps (WdB 13; recorded in use 1811-1819), with taxation of 36st and 20st respectively entered into the handstamps, also 136 noted in ink on front. Folded letter with full content.
An unusual use of these double-circle handstamps on mail originating outside the Dutch East Indies and in the period of the British Occupation of Java; these British double-circle postmarks were used by the Dutch administration after the British left in 1816. Very fine and rare.
