Letter dated 12 January 1655 from the Department of Justice in Batavia to Johan van Riebeeck (1619-1677), the first Commander of the Cape of Good Hope. Empty letter sheet containing a small photographic reproduction of the original correspondence dated 12 January 1655, and possibly with the name of the vessel that carried the letter “St Elizabeth of Dassel”(?).
ONE OF THE EARLIEST SURVIVING LETTERS FROM BATAVIA SENT TO THE FIRST COMMANDER OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE TO THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF BATAVIA. WITH A COMPLETE AND PERFECTLY PRESERVED WAX SEAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, “DES RAADS VAN JUSTITIE TOT BATAVIA”.
The recipient, Johan van Riebeeck, was appointed by the Dutch East India Company’s Gentlemen Seventeen to improve the anchorage at Table Bay and develop the Dutch Settlement in what would later be Cape Town. The settlement was to be a way station on the VOC trade route for vessels sailing from Netherlands to the East Indies.
