Group Lot: British and Dutch Occupation Markings on Stampless Covers: A wonderful group of 28 folded covers or letters, includes 8 letters with double-circle handstamps used during British Occupation 1812-17, including 1 Sourabaya and 6 Batavia (one with "POST PAID", one with "CHERIBON" and one with "INDRAMAYOE" negative oval, others without additional markings); 9 examples with Samarang double-circle handstamps used during Dutch Occupation 1817-25, with "POST PAID" (one marked "Cito" in manuscript, stained but rare), and one superb Post Comptoir Sourabaya with "FRANCO" straightline (WdB 38, 39); 2 letters with "FRANCO" straightline handstamps, as used in Sourabaya 1819, 1823 (WdB 39); 9 letters with town handstamps, including clearly struck red "PACCALONGAN" circular datestamp (WdB 21) on undated folded cover with part of letter (very rare, with 2009 Van der Vlist certificate), one with Indramayoe oval and others with standard markings from Buitenzorg, Cheribon, Rembang and Tagal. some toning and faults endemic to the area and period, but overall an exhibit-worthy group (many are on original exhibit pages with good information), most of the better items have certificates (Van der Vlist describes marking enhancement on a couple of items and so dismisses them as "vervalising" as was his habit). Overall Fine with several Very Fine covers, a large group of scarce to rare covers with an average value of $200-300 and a few worth closer to $750-1,000
