1844, letter from Amsterdam to Surabaya, datelined 1 Nov. 1844. Struck on arrival in Batavia by the rare and misspelled oval "Zeebrief Ongefrankee" postmark in blue ("Ongefrankee" instead of "Ongefrankeerd"), known only in use 1844-45 (WdB 68b). A perfectly struck postmark and the earliest recorded use. On reverse is oval forwarding handstamp of Behn, Meyer & Co. Singapore. From the correspondence to Salm & Bouman in Sourabaya: With charge notation 60c on front for maritime mail (rate valid Apr. 1816-Sep. 1850). A letter in excellent condition with the rare misspelled postmark.
