1821, "Resident Djocjacarta" circular marking with a start at centre, on complete folded letter with full contents sent from J.D. Boutet in Djocjocarta 7 Aug. 1821 to L.J. Block, avocat in Samarang. The circular stamp of Resident Djoccjacarta is not a postmark but a mark of the local Resident to put on official mail. The notation on front "Franco 6 st." indicates that 6 stuivers was paid for the distance Djocjocarta-Samarang. The marking struck in red is not listed in Wolff de Beer's catalogue and it is possibly the only known. A fine and clean letter in immaculate condition. With detailed certificate van der Vlist (2009).
The "Resident Djocjacarta" marking is similar to the "Resident Souracarta" marking (WdB 60); both are personal handstamps applied to official mail. The Resident Souracarta is listed in Wolff de Beer's catalogue and is known on three letters. One letter sold in the Magnolia sale May 2023, lot 1419 (hammer $1800).
