USS Des Moines and the Armenian Refugee Evacuation
1915 envelope from Larnaca to Egypt, franked with United States 1¢ and 2¢ stamps together with a Panama Canal 2¢ stamp, all tied by the duplex “USS DES MOINES / AM DEC 4 1915 / LARNAKA, CYPRUS” cancellation, with a matching strike on the reverse.
The USS Des Moines was one of two United States warships that participated in the evacuation of Armenian refugees from Jaffa in 1915 during the First World War. Covers cancelled aboard the vessel while at Larnaca are scarce and are closely associated with this important humanitarian mission, making this an exceptional item of maritime and wartime postal history.
