This folded entire, mailed on 4 July 1908 from the Mukhtar of Komi Kebir to the Governor of Famagusta, was posted during the final stages of the Cypriot Bishops’ Conflict (1900–1909). Franked with a King Edward VII ½ piastre stamp cancelled by the Rural Service VR/Komi Kebir handstamp and backstamped Famagusta A, 4 July 1908, the enclosed letter protests British Government regulations concerning the election of the new Archbishop of Cyprus. The Mukhtar argues that the appointment of the Archbishop was solely an ecclesiastical matter, governed by the ancient canons and traditions of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, and should remain free from colonial administrative interference.
