1878 (9 Aug.) Envelope from Littlehampton to Major W.H. Ross, 26th Native Indian Regiment, Larnaca, bearing Great Britain QV 2½d blue, tied by manuscript “STAMPED” and Littlehampton AU 9 78 c.d.s., endorsed “Via Brindisi”. Reverse with manuscript “Reply to mine sent from Malta” and LARNACA 16.8.1878 arrival c.d.s. Carried during the brief six-week deployment of Indian troops following the cession of Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire to Britain on 8 July 1878. A remarkable and historically important early British Cyprus military cover, one recorded to date.
