Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II, c. 380-413, AV dinar, 7.78 g. (19 mm). Obverse: Chhatra type; king with fine layers of curls draped along his head, standing left, offering oblations on a fire altar, with left hand on hilt of sword; attendant at right holding parasol (chhatra) over the king, circular Brahmi legend around. Reverse: nimbate Lakshmi standing to left, holding lotus flower in her left hand that originates from the root on which she stands, and long diadem in right, with tamgha to left and Brahmi legend to right, vikkramādityaḥ. Kumar, TOTGE 2024, Class I, variety C, 4, 2. Raven, CG2/group 6.
EF, a somewhat crude strike with rusty dies, with some unusual details, for example of the king's delicate facial features and on the attendant, shown here wearing a tunic with a wavy lower hem over a loin cloth, and the parasol from which a short pennon hangs down; also good details to the goddess on reverse with a few areas of flatness; a minor hole to the left of goddess, a somewhat uneven flan.
