Egypt, medal, Mehemet Ali, Overland Mail route to India 1840, 73.37 g. (58 mm). Obverse: bust half left of bearded Ali Pacha (1805-1848) with inscription: "MEHEMET ALI PACHA" around. Reverse: ten-line inscription "FROM THE COMMITTEE / THE FRIEND / OF SCIENCE COMMERCE / & ORDER WHO PROTECTED / THE SUBJECTS AND PROPERTY / OF ADVERSE POWERS / AND KEPT OPEN / THE OVERLAND ROUTE / TO INDIA /1840" with two palm fronds. A wonderful and scarce medal with a choice, semi-reflective mahogany bronze finish, with a few minor edge marks.
