Description

Britain, Catuvellauni and Trinovantes, Cunobelin (c. 8-41 AD). Au stater, 5.39 g. (21 mm on the long side). Camulodunum (Colchester), ca. 20-43 AD. Obverse: CA-MV, grain ear with no central stalk. Reverse: CVNO, horse prancing right; small star and branch above, ringed pellet below, traces of beaded border. ABC 2783. Van Arsdell 1933-3. Spink 283.
A most attractive coin from King Cunobelinus, the greatest of all late Iron Age kings of Britain, later remembered in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline.
EF, struck on an oblong planchet as often seen, with a weak obverse die and a richly-detailed reverse, well-centered.
