Ce petit pan de mur jaune — ou plutôt ivoire — qui absorbe la lumière pour mieux la renvoyer dans notre rétine, revêt une résonance presque proustienne. Il s’agit de peinture à l’état pur, avec les touches de pinceau déposées par Albert Marquet à cet endroit précis, pour nous faire pénétrer dans sa composition. De cette tache, soudain devenue pignon, naît la façade d’une maison à deux étages, immédiatement suivie de son reflet dans le fleuve.
Toute la scène s’organise autour de la ligne horizontale d’un chemin de halage — tracée de façon nette et précise — qui divise la composition comme un miroir. À cette structure géométrique, Marquet oppose les formes organiques des collines en arrière-plan et, plus encore, le feuillage dense des arbres qui occupent, au premier plan, un îlot au milieu des eaux.
Paysagiste sensible aux effets de lumière — qu’il aime isoler en petites touches — Marquet flirte avec l’abstraction sans jamais s’y abandonner totalement. Sa touche reste visible, étalant les couleurs comme s’il peignait directement sur une palette. La bande horizontale figurant la berge et son reflet mêle bruns et verts dans une approche picturale annonciatrice du fauvisme.
Sa palette — à la fois sourde et lumineuse — déploie une subtile harmonie de couleurs complémentaires, plaçant Marquet parmi les plus grands coloristes du mouvement fauve.

This small patch of yellow—perhaps more ivory—wall, which absorbs light only to reflect it back into our eyes, carries a nearly Proustian resonance. It is pure painting, with brushstrokes laid down by Albert Marquet at that very spot, drawing us into his composition. From this blotch, which suddenly becomes a gable, emerges the façade of a two-story building, followed immediately by its reflection in the river.
Everything is structured around the horizontal line of a towpath—clearly and carefully drawn—dividing the scene like a mirror. Against this geometric organization, Marquet sets the organic forms of the rolling hills in the background, and more prominently, the lush foliage of the imposing trees on an islet in the foreground.
A landscape painter deeply attuned to the effects of light—which he isolates in small touches—Marquet flirts with abstraction without fully giving in to it. His brushwork remains visible, spreading color almost as if directly on a palette. The horizontal band representing the bank and its reflection blends browns and greens in a painterly approach that heralds Fauvism.
His palette—at once muted and luminous—unfolds a subtle harmony of complementary colors, establishing Marquet among the greatest colorists of the Fauvist movement.
