Esquisse réalisée à Rome durant le séjour formateur de Preller en Italie entre 1827 et 1831, dans le cadre de son Grand Tour. Cette vue des ruines antiques de la colline du Palatin à proximité des anciens Horti Sallustiani, reflète son intérêt pour l’Antiquité classique et les paysages chargés d’histoire.
Combinant ruines, architecture, figures humaines et végétation, le dessin témoigne de la précision de son trait et de son style romantique-classique. Ce séjour influencera durablement son œuvre, notamment ses fresques mythologiques inspirées de l’Odyssée.

Sketch executed in Rome during Preller’s formative stay in Italy between 1827 and 1831, part of his Grand Tour. This view of the ancient ruins on the Palatine Hill, near the former Horti Sallustiani, reflects his fascination with classical antiquity and historically rich landscapes.
Combining ruins, architecture, human figures and vegetation, the drawing demonstrates the precision of his line and his Romantic-Classical style.
This Italian period would deeply influence his later works, including his mythological frescoes inspired by the Odyssey.
