Huile sur toile. L. 36 cm × H. 30 cm.
Oil on canvas. W. 36 cm × H. 30 cm. Pastoral landscape with a cow, a horse, goats and shepherds. Relined; some localised restoration and repainting.
The cow — the most characteristic element of the artist's manner — remains in very large part original. Provenance: from an old French collection. An Amsterdam animal painter and landscape specialist, Adriaen van de Velde (1636–1672) is one of the most accomplished masters of seventeenth-century Dutch painting in the pastoral genre, celebrated for the delicacy of his observation of rural life, the refinement of his light and the vivacity of his animals. A very similar pastoral scene — "Animals near a Building" — is held in the collections of the National Gallery in London, attesting to the consistency and quality of the present work within the artist's corpus.
