Description

Oil on panel, H. 77 cm × W. 66 cm. Depicting a vase of orange-toned flowers against a dark background. Signed lower right, dated on the reverse.

Executed in 1929, this work exemplifies Varese's mastery of chiaroscuro and his affinity for floral still lifes of marked contrast — warm harmonies, precise execution, and light concentrated on the floral motif in the tradition of the Old Masters. A Milanese painter working in the lineage of Italian post-impressionism, Carlo Varese (1903–1977) was distinguished by an assured colorist sensibility and a technical rigour recognised by his contemporaries. This "Bouquet de Soucis" was awarded a gold medal at the Bologna Exhibition in 1929, a testament to the esteem in which the artist was held in Italian artistic circles of the interwar period.
