Reverse: Crocodile right, chained to palm frond with wreath at top with long ties to right; two palm fronds at base. RPC I 523.
VF. A beautiful As struck in the Roman colony of Nemausus (Nîmes) around 16-10 BC to commemorate the conquest of Egypt by Octavian and Agrippa in 30 BC. The unusual design of a crocodile, symbolically representing Egypt, chained to a palm tree with a long wreath, representing Rome. The captive crocodile features in the Nîmes coat of arms to this day; showing good portraits, complete devices on both sides, and a wonderfully naïve depiction of a crocodile.
